Wisdom teeth
Erupted or impacted?
An erupted wisdom tooth has come in through the gums. An impacted one is trapped under the gum or in the jaw, and it can lead to problems like infection or damage to nearby teeth.

Does a tooth need to come out?
Removal may make sense if you have…
✓ Pain or swelling at the back of your mouth
✓ A wisdom tooth stuck under the gum
✓ Infection or swollen gums around a wisdom tooth
✓ A tooth too damaged to repair
Something else may work better if…
– The tooth can be saved. A root canal and crown may help.
– Your wisdom teeth are healthy and fit. We may just watch them.
– You want IV sedation. We offer laughing gas and can refer you.
– Swelling makes it hard to breathe. Go to the ER.

Paying for extractions
Many insurance plans help cover extractions. Members save 10%, and HFD, Cherry or CareCredit can spread the cost.
Extraction questions
Do I need my wisdom teeth out?
Not always. If they're healthy and cleanable, we may just watch them. We suggest removal for problems like pain, infection, gum disease or damage to nearby teeth.
Who removes wisdom teeth at your office?
Extractions, including wisdom teeth, are done at our Danbury office by our team, which includes an oral surgeon.
What should I eat after an extraction?
Soft, cool foods for the first few days. Avoid straws and smoking, which can slow healing.
What is a dry socket?
A painful problem when the blood clot leaves the socket too early. Following aftercare steps lowers the risk. Call us if pain gets worse after a few days.
Does insurance cover wisdom teeth removal?
Many plans cover part of it. We'll check your benefits before treatment.
